A comprehensive inventory of artificial river barriers is the essential first step towards restoring river connectivity. As part of the Phragmographysis project, field teams survey more than 100 km of the Diarizos river network, covering the main channel and its principal tributaries.
Each barrier is identified, photographed and mapped. Using a standardised field protocol, information is collected on its type, dimensions, physical condition, current or former function, whether it continues to serve a useful purpose, and its potential effects on the movement of aquatic organisms, river flow and sediment transport.
The collected data are incorporated into an open-access geospatial database and will be made publicly available through an interactive web map. This resource will fill a significant knowledge gap and provide a valuable decision-support tool for river management, restoration planning and future conservation actions in Cyprus.
